Ok, so some of you may have heard that I'm engaged as of yesterday. As part of our relationship, Janelle and I are going through a daily devotional and this week's theme is grace and it got me thinking.
What IS grace? We might think of treating people kindly when they don't deserve it would qualify as grace. But let's put this in perspective. The example in the book paints two pictures:
A homeless man shows up on your doorstep after Christmas dinner, asking for food. You give him a plate and send him on his way. Is that grace?
Now, let's say the same situation, but there is a clear plastic bag over his shoulder where you see all of your Christmas presents from under your tree. Do you still feed him, even though he's stolen from you? That's grace.
How does this apply to our lives? Remember that God does this every day with each one of us-none of us deserve the gift of eternal life that he offers us through his son, but he does. That's grace, and that's the example.
So that means how we treat each other is very important-and should affect how we treat each other inside the church. How you interpret that will be determined by your experience in church...and we should all ask ourselves how we contribute to the problem.
Cheers!
